Ontario Policy Discussion Update

January, 2022

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, SLCO identified as its priority issues Long Term Care, Aging in Place for Seniors, Pension Protection and Teleworking. The arrival of the Pandemic made the issues of Long Term Care and Aging in Place even more urgent. As part of its process, SLCO consulted with EDAs and other Commissions, garnering endorsement of its resolutions – particularly the resolution on Long Term Care.

As a result of this hard work by many Senior Registered Liberals, and discussion among its members, SLCO submitted three resolutions to the SLC National Policy discussion. The leadership by SLCO led to two policy resolutions on Long Term Care and Affordable Rental Housing for Vulnerable Seniors being adopted as Policy by the virtual convention in April 2021.

While the new SLCO Board elected at the upcoming Biennial General Meeting will determine its own work, polling tells us that Aging in Place is a top priority among Canada’s over-65’s. A March of Dimes survey in April 2021 reported three-quarters (78 per cent) of Canadians want to age in their current homes – but just 26 per cent predict they’ll be able to do so.
