Why I am a Liberal by John Hamblin (NB) September 7, 2023 Share Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Reddit Share on LinkedIn Email I was first attracted to the Liberal party when I met a young man named Pierre Elliott Trudeau, who was running for office in Mount Royal Riding. I had just turned twenty and I found, in talking to him, that he was intelligent and well-spoken, with a depth of knowledge and a true love for our country. Over the ensuing many years, I supported the Liberals and Prime Minister Trudeau, who did an excellent job of leading our country during some very trying times in our history. Over time, I raised a family and built a career in the technology field and, though I continued to support the Liberals, I drifted away from politics. Then, a few years back, I decided to once again get more involved in politics. I felt strongly that our country truly needed leadership that supported all people of all races and ages in our great land, and that I needed to actively support the right party. As a child I was instilled with the belief that all people are equal. As I grew up, I became a staunch believer in democracy. This word comes from the Greek “Demos” meaning people and “Kratos” meaning power. In my view, to be a democracy requires as Abraham Lincoln said; “a government of the people, by the people and for the people”. In Canada, we are blessed with a truly diverse population, including both indigenous people and folk with roots from around the world. Over the years, I have come to the realization that the Liberal party was the only party that truly embraced this diversity and showed by its actions and policies that inclusiveness is one of its core principles. From the composition of the cabinet to the wide diversity of the members of parliament, to the policy initiatives over the last many years, the Liberals have shown that they are the voice of all of the people living in our country. I am proud to be a Liberal and to help build a truly democratic society. John Hamblin
