Why I am a Liberal by Bill Campbell (PEI) October 17, 2023 Share Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Reddit Share on LinkedIn Email Dear Fellow Liberals, I stand before you today not only as Bill Campbell, but as a proud member of the Liberal Party of Canada—a party I have been loyal to since the 1970s. I stand before you as a testament to the belief that politics can be a force for good, that it can improve lives and strengthen communities. I have dedicated my life to affordable housing and community development here in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. My work with the Canada Microcredit Educators Group and Kings Square Non-Profit Housing Corporation is a reflection of the very principles that form the bedrock of the Liberal Party. It is the same set of principles that has made me a lifelong Liberal. From the very beginning, I was drawn to the Liberal Party’s unwavering commitment to social justice and equality. The Liberals have consistently championed initiatives that strengthen our healthcare system, bolster our education sector, support our seniors, provide affordable housing, and improve social services. Their actions have embodied the belief that government can and should be a tool to improve the lives of its citizens. When I look back at the accomplishments of the Liberal Party since the 1970s—the establishment of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the introduction of the Canada Health Act, the legalization of same-sex marriage, and the more recent introduction of the Canada Child Benefit and the legalization of recreational cannabis—I see a party that is not afraid to lead, to evolve, to rise to the challenges of the day. As a lifelong Liberal, I believe that we must all play a role in shaping the kind of society we want to live in. We must strive to create a Canada that is inclusive, compassionate, and fair—a Canada that leaves no one behind. And I firmly believe that the Liberal Party is the best vehicle to achieve this vision. J.W. Bill Campbell
