Why I am a Liberal by Christine Blackburn – BC February 11, 2023 Share Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Reddit Share on LinkedIn Email Looking back, I remember as a youth questioning the conservative politics of my family. Subsequently, after coming to Canada, I found myself leaning towards liberalism. Meeting Bob Nault in what was then the Kenora-Rainy River Riding in Northern Ontario, pulled me into the fold. I really found an affinity with him and his supporters – like-minded people who offered a feeling of ‘family’ that, as an immigrant, I missed so much. It was while studying for a Social Work degree that finally matters came into focus and I became a committed Liberal. I realized that if an individual is to effect change, then one needs to be active politically – if only on a small, seemingly insignificant, scale. I believe in the power of synergy and the sum of separate effects; working together can cause change for the betterment of humanity and the planet. I am a tiny cog in the Liberal wheel. The Liberal position of centre to centre-left sits well with my beliefs. People in the Party come and go, but underlying everything for me is the Liberal ideology that aligns with my own values. Values such as: rule of law; democracy driven by the organization’s grass roots; equality; freedom of the press, speech and religion – to name a few.
